Tarragindi Queenslander games room featuring coffered ceiling design, custom wet bar with arched cabinetry, wine storage, billiard table, and lounge seating - Brisbane character home renovation by Quorum Studios

A young family in Tarragindi engaged our Brisbaneresidential architecture practice to add two dedicated entertainment spaces totheir cherished character home: a sophisticated games room and a jam room formusical creativity. With a growing family and a passion for music andrecreation, they needed functional spaces that would enhance their lifestylewithout compromising the heritage charm of their traditional Queenslander.

This Queenslander renovation presented a uniquearchitectural challenge for our Brisbane team. Unlike typical Queenslanderextensions where the home is raised to create additional lower-level space, this project required us to work within the existing footprint. The house wouldremain in its original position, meaning we had to design around theconstraints of existing low-level structural beams—a common issue in heritagehome renovations across Brisbane's southside suburbs.

Working beneath a Queenslander that hasn't been raisedpresents significant spatial limitations. The existing beam structure createdceiling height restrictions that could have made the under house conversionfeel cramped and uninviting—hardly suitable for entertainment and creativespaces where atmosphere is everything.

We transformed this constraint into a distinctive designfeature. By incorporating a coffered ceiling design throughout the lower levelrenovation, we worked with the existing structural beams rather than againstthem. This approach, refined through years of Brisbane character home projects, allowed us to honour the Queenslander's original structure while creatingvisually striking spaces. The coffered ceiling not only concealed the necessarybeams but elevated the aesthetic, creating visual depth and architecturalinterest throughout both rooms.

Games Room - A sophisticated entertainment areafeaturing a custom wet bar with integrated wine storage, comfortable loungeseating, and a full-size billiard table. Arched architectural details and warmtimber joinery create an inviting atmosphere perfect for family gatherings andentertaining friends. The coffered ceiling design adds a layer of refinementunexpected in a lower-level space.

Jam Room - A dedicated music studio designed forrehearsals, recording sessions, and creative expression. The space comfortablyaccommodates full band setups while maintaining acoustic consideration withinthe design—essential for a family who values both music and harmony with theirneighbours.

This Tarragindi residential architecture projectdemonstrates how thoughtful design can overcome site constraints whilerespecting the heritage and character of traditional Queensland homes. Bykeeping the existing Queenslander in its original position and maximizing thepotential of the lower level, our Brisbane architecture practice deliveredfunctional, beautiful spaces that seamlessly integrate with the family'slifestyle and honour the home's rich architectural heritage.
