A Queenslander extension in Tingalpa, Brisbane,built around the backyard pool.

This family had a lovely old Queenslander on abig 1,128m² block in Tingalpa. They wanted more room, a better place toentertain, and a backyard they'd actually use. They didn't want to lose thecharm that made them buy the house.

The biggest problem was the pool. It sat off onits own, and you couldn't see it or get to it easily from the house. So weangled the new extension towards it. Now the house faces the pool, and walkingout to it feels natural. One simple change fixed the whole layout.

The home extension adds a new master suite witha walk-in robe, ensuite and a private verandah. A new mudroom sits between thehouse and the garage, so muddy shoes and school bags have somewhere to go.

Out the back, a new building holds the garageand a pool pavilion. The pavilion has a butler's kitchen, barbecue and aservery window that opens onto the pool. It's an outdoor entertaining area madefor Brisbane summers. Between the garage and the pavilion is a sauna with itsown shower. Add a fire pit and shade sails, and the backyard works all yearround.

From the street, the new garage and front porchare designed to match the original Queenslander. Timber posts, the same metalroof and cobblestone paving make it all look like it has always been there.
