The Cumulus Hangar & Home transforms a functional necessity into an architectural opportunity within the Kybong Airpark Community. This distinctive residence features a dramatic barrel-vault form that defines both structures—providing necessary volume for aircraft storage while creating soaring, light-filled living spaces above. The design thoughtfully integrates residential comfort with aviation functionality through robust industrial materials (Colorbond Surfmist for main roof structures, Monument accents).
Located within the Kybong Airpark Community, the project consists of the following: the aircraft hangar with mezzanine offices and workshop, and the sophisticated two-storey residence featuring open-plan living areas, master suite, and seamless connection to outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glazing opens the living areas to expansive views, reinforcing the connection to the airfield while subtle aviation-inspired details connect the home to its context without resorting to themed decoration. The result is a compelling balance between pragmatic functionality and considered design that elevates this specialised building typology beyond pure utility—creating a home where passion and everyday living exist in perfect harmony.
