‘What you have in mind sounds amazing! Could I confirm what your budget is?’ Queue the crickets in the background…
A recent catchup with fellow architects and building designers revealed that this is a frequent phenomenon for all designers when discussing project particulars, especially around the topic of your budget. Knowing what a client can afford is of great benefit to your architect or building designer as this greatly assists in managing your expectations around what is likely possible and achievable around your project expectations.
As your project develops, the term ‘budget’ starts to get referred to as your Total Project Cost which includes your Cost of Works plus all other costs associated with your project. Your Cost of Works figure is very much like a Matryoshka Doll, more commonly known as stacking dolls, whereby as your project develops with each step or layer, so will your Cost of Works ‘Figure’ as each project aspect is established until you reach your final figure.
Your budget is what will enable you to undertake your project so don’t be afraid to chat about it. Funding for your budget can come from sources like the sale of your current home, your savings, inheritance or generally via a loan from a financial institution.
